When designing the office for Shout About Suffolk we wanted to create something a little different; a space that was inspirational, fun and uplifting.
Google is synonymous with the idea of a fun ‘playground style’ workplace. They have pushed the boundaries of office design with indoor ski-lifts, slides between floors and giant tea-cup desks.
We didn’t have space for a ski lift or climbing wall; but we carefully curated the large open plan space we had and added various work zones with the use of glass walls and partitions so the overall sense of space was not lost.
The first floor Inspiration Room – before and after:
We created a ‘breakout area’ in the reception with a kitchen and various seating areas where Lab and Hub members can catch up over a coffee or lunch. The two main office areas are the Lab and The Hub. Both are open plan, light and airy but offer comfortable working environments which are collaborative and inspiring to work in.
Upstairs we have 2 traditional meeting rooms – well if you ignore the cloud wall paper and 3D balloon wall lights; which Lab and Hub members can book for private use. We also have ‘The Inspiration Room; a large space at the front of the building that has floor to ceiling whiteboard walls, astro turf flooring and cow hide pouffes. The space wouldn’t be complete without a table football game (In Ipswich Town colours of course). This space is adaptable and is regularly used for group mentoring, talks from guest speakers and internal brainstorming meetings.
We also have a large ‘conference’ table in the Lab which can be used for informal internal meetings, and it is where we host Friday Lunch Club on the last Friday of the month.
Alongside our work commitments we want Shout About Suffolk to be a real community for our members and local Suffolk entrepreneurs.
We host talks with successful local business people, our latest was William Kendall, who launched Green and Blacks Organic Chocolate and The Covent Garden Soup Company.
We have a table football league – The Football Pitch, which gives everyone in the Lab and Hub a chance to meet each other and ‘pitch’ their businesses whilst playing a friendly game of table football!
We also host film nights, with uplifting films about the trials and tribulations of running your own business. Our film this month is Chef.
And we must not forget to mention our parties; our early Summer bash to welcome all our members to SAS was Cuban themed and well attended, with Cuban canapes and cocktails supplied by our fabulous neighbours Honey and Harvey and a fantastic DJ we partied into the night.
Plans are afoot for a Halloween fancy dress day and Christmas Party.
Our aim is to create a unique work space where our entrepreneurs feel inspired by their environment and encouraged and supported by the Shout About Suffolk team.
